Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic TLD is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level names remained running.
